We will also discuss the various factors or clues you can keep an eye out for while determining your skin type; the products you must use and lot’s more. So, let’s start the ride, shall we?
THE ANATOMY OF YOUR SKIN
Our skin varies in texture, type, and the way it reacts to certain stuff. We need to understand this skin science in order to serve our skin well. There are various layers to it and things like pores, skin cells, and texture, are a part of it.
Now, skin type can be broadly classified into 4 major categories –
A. Oily Skin
B. Combination Skin
C. Dry Skin
D. Normal skin
WHAT IS MY SKIN TYPE?
Your skin type is determined by your genetics and environment. It’s also affected by the amount of sebum, which is natural oil produced by your glands. Sebum helps keep your skin moisturized, but it can get too much and lead to breakouts.
Your skin type is also determined by the amount of melanin, which is another natural pigment produced in your body that gives you a tan when exposed to the sun. If you have more melanin, then it means you’re less likely to burn in the sun or have sensitive areas that are prone to sun damage (like the nose).
How To Find Out My Skin Type?
Step #1
Firstly, wash your face in the morning with a gentle foaming face wash, preferably organic (cos, why not?!) Make sure that the foaming cleanser/facewash has a mild formula, so that it is not too harsh on your skin.
Step #2
Now, pat dry your face with a clean napkin and leave it bare.
Step #3
Make sure to not apply anything on your skin for an hour.
Step #4
Post one hour, take clean tissue paper or blotting papers and place it on your entire face. Make sure to use a single sheet of whatever you use. Then, dab the paper gently on your face.
Step #5
Now, take a close look at the tissue paper.
IF – The tissue paper has some dry skin flakes, which means you have a dry skin type. Sometimes, you might not notice dry flakes but your skin will feel stretchy and super rough to touch.
IF – The tissue paper is stained with oil patches all over it and if your skin also feels greasy all over, this means you have an oily skin type. Your face will also have a glossy shine after one hour of cleansing.
IF – The tissue paper shows imprints of oil stains on your forehead and nose, This indicates that you have a combination skin type. The rest of your face will seem normal, without any greasiness.
IF – The tissue paper comes off without any residue of skin flakes, and is neither oily at all, then you have a normal skin type.
Whichever skin type you end up being, celebrate it and most importantly, follow an appropriate skincare routine. A wrong product can be harsh for your particular skin type. Therefore, make sure to mindfully choose skincare products in tandem with your skin type.
In fact, there are organic skincare brands that are developing products suitable for all skin types. – Keeping in mind that the formulations cater to your derma issues but are not limited to them.
